There are two primary types of sleep: Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep, which is further divided into three stages. Stage 1 (NREM): This is the lightest phase of sleep where a person transitions in and out of sleep. Muscles relax, and both heart and breathing rates slow down.
